Falconer Photography Illinois-Beccas Release

Falconry is a sport that has been around for a very long time. Falconers trap a certain type of bird, depending on what they plan on hunting. They catch this bird as an juvenile. The falconer will then work with the bird daily to help “man” it down meaning train it. They train it to fly to the fist and to return when called or lured back. They work together in the field to successfully hunt prey. The falconer will stir up the prey and the bird will hunt it down. They use the game they catch to feed the bird. In some places around the world, they will hunt to feed their families as well as the bird.

You may recall the other blog I did with John and his other red tailed hawk Tiva. You can find that link Click here. He had caught a new bird last fall and named her Becca. Becca was a very cute bird. She was smaller than Tiva. John decided to release her after her first season out with him. Falconers don’t always connect with the bird they choose as well as some others. He got Becca through her first year of life which is the hardest for these raptors. She is now free to hunt on her own.

You will see in the series below the studio shots I took of them, followed by the release of Becca. The release starts with taking the jesses and anklets off the birds legs. He then will remove the hood and she will take her last jump off his fist. Happy hunting Becca!
